Abstract: »Rape Revenge films - towards a "lighter touch"?
The sub-genre of films that centre principally on extra-legal revenge for acts of rape are worth, perhaps, dividing into those which follow the story of the victim and those which trace the actions of another affected party. For reasons to do with the censorship codes such revenge stories were circumscribed before the 1970s unless located well in the past. They have flourished since then. The majority follow the reaction and narrative of the victim. There are also a significant number of films which focus on what third parties do – usually family members. They are often represented as part of the cinema of vigilantism. Leaving aside the question of what differences result from the identity of the perpetrator of the revenge, what characterises all these films has been the understandable seriousness of the films.
In the past five years, however, two mainstream films have reached multiplexes which have been described as "rape revenge comedies". This paper explores how such a phenomenon can have arisen and seeks to analyse why these films have been so described. The films are the Paul Verhoeven/Isabelle Huppert 2016 film "Elle" and the 2020 Cary Mulligan film "Promising Young Woman". The paper explores the reactions to these films, assesses them and their significance and seeks to relate them to such earlier films as The Bride Wore Black (1968) and Pepi Luci Bom y otras chicas del montón (1980).« (Source: Online Program)
